Dr Seuss Birthday

We decided a while ago to do a birthday party for the boys with the theme of Dr Seuss. So over the last few months and hundreds of hours on Pinterest, we pulled together the coolest Dr Seuss party ever. Here are some of the pics from the day.

What we did for the day

This was possibly the easiest part of all the catering. Pink ink yink drink, made from lemonade and cranberry juice – it looks red in the picture, but was actually a dark pink.

I knew from the beginning I wanted to do green eggs. But I couldn’t decide whether to colour whole eggs, or do it this way. I am glad I finally decided on this, because it really worked out well. My piping skills, however, need a little more work – I guess a piping bag that actually works would have helped too.

Green eggs – and ham

I absolutely love the story of the sneetches. Its a moral tale about how you need to rejoice in the good things you have and not dwell on the things you don’t. Some of the pizzas had star shaped ham on them, and others didn’t (for sneetches with stars and sneetches without).

The popcorn was a winner and also super easy to do. Simply roll up a whole bunch of coloured paper into cones and add popcorn. It really made the table look amazingly colourful – and was enjoyed by all the children old enough to eat it.

The candy cane straws were awesome. It took me ages to find them, but I finally hit on http://www.ingoodcompany.co.za – which has the most amazing goodies for parties. Go and take a look – its well worth it. Incidentally, the candy cane table cloth was wrapping paper bought in bulk at Westpack.

My poor office colleagues had to deal with slow prints for the week before the party. All the food labels, these arrows and quite a few of the quotes we scattered around the house were printed at the office. Large file picture PDFs take a long time to spool – so everyone’s print jobs were on hold while I made my babies’ day special.

Also from In Good Company – I bought a few of these paper pom poms and strung them up around the place as truffula trees. I would have made stalks for them, but there simply aren’t enough hours in the day.

Oddly enough, the food I spent the most time on, I completely forgot to serve. I made red jelly in a pan so it would be flat. I tried to cut it out, but it was too soft. So hubby suggested brilliantly we freeze the red jelly – which we did. I then cut out little fishies from the red jelly and placed them in small plastic dishes. Then I used blue jelly to pour over the top of those and let that set. It worked brilliantly to create little fish in fishbowls. But along with the fruit salad (fruit from the truffula trees) they didn’t see the light of day. Feel free to use the technique – be sure to show me pictures afterwards – oh and make sure the second set of jelly is much cooler before pouring over the frozen ones.

Without doubt the piece de resistance of the day was the cake and its companions. Thanks to my amazing friend Mireille, we got the most amazing cat in the hat cake, with two Thing smashcakes and some cupcakes to boot. Made by the amazing Mel at Luvies Bakery – they not only looked spectacular, but tasted incredible.

The boys on the day

Our boys had the most amazing day – they love to be around people and are rarely worried about crowds and the like. So it was lovely to see them revelling in the lime light. So many people warned me not to have a big party for their first, because they could be overwhelmed – well they simply loved the day and so did Jon and I.
